Health and Social Care Standards: My Support My Life

‘The Health and Social Care Standards: My Support My Life’ is a government publication outlining a core set of principles to be followed by all Health and Social Care bodies.

These principles support the overall care experience and provide care organisations with the standards to which they should be performing.

These principles create flexibility to meet individual outcomes while ensuring each individual receives the highest quality care and support.

The standards are a guideline for anyone who may be part of a caring or support environment to use; whether formal or informally.

Primarily, the standards can be grouped under one of the following headings:

1: I experience high-quality care and support that is right for me.
2: I am fully involved in all decisions about my care and support.
3: I have confidence in the people who support and care for me.
4: I have confidence in the organisation providing my care and support.
5: I experience a high-quality environment if the organisation provides the premises.

Each heading (outcome) has its own descriptive statements, which explain what achieving the outcome looks like in practice. The principles ensure that basic human rights are upheld, promoting choice, confidence, and involvement at all times.

Since 2018, shortly after the publication was developed, the standards have been taken into account by scrutiny bodies such as the Care Inspectorate and Healthcare Improvement Scotland in relation to inspections and registration of health and social care services. This can be used in conjunction with the self-evaluation criteria put out from the Care Inspectorate to create your learning and development path.
