Carer Success Stories : Vikki Telfer

There are many opportunities for professional development when you enter a career in care with SRS Care Solutions. Aside from full free training and the opportunity to undertake an SVQ, many of our carers have progressed with us from Care Assistant positions all the way to Co-ordinator and managerial positions.

We’re proud to invest in our people and promote career progression and internal promotion wherever possible.

Vikki Telfer is one such employee whose career has grown since she started at SRS Care Solutions. We spoke with Vikki to discuss this journey:

What role did you start in at SRS?

I started as a Support Worker in April 2018 after a career change from being in Retail. I quickly knew I’d made the right decision as it was so rewarding. Some of my duties in this role were to ensure the service users’ needs were met daily. “

How did your career progress?

“My focus and dedication to the service users enabled me to become a Team Leader for Hawick. In this role my duties were to have regular meetings with my team of carers. Other duties included spot checks, client reviews, observations, and quality assurance. After doing this for a while I then progressed onto Co-ordinator for Hawick.

My passion for ensuring clients had their continuity made me successful in this role along with helping other coordinators succeed in their roles too. I also provided training for new Co-ordinators. My duties as a Co-ordinator were to ensure continuity for service users, maximise capacity for the area geographically and dealing with any sickness from staff promptly by getting the runs covered quickly. “

What is your current role at SRS?

I have now just recently become Deputy Manager for the Borders, a role I’m loving and am learning very quickly. “

What is the favourite part of your job?

Bringing a smile to everyone’s face. I listen to all staff with any concerns they may have. Also seeing the service users happy within their home.

What is the most challenging part of your role?

Covid-19, this has brought many challenges from staff isolations to having adequate PPE for all carers.

What would you say to those thinking of working in care?

Don’t hesitate, it is the most rewarding job I think anyone could ever have.
